APRIL is National Poetry Month, which means different things in different places on Long Island, but at least three events will celebrate Walt Whitman, the island’s own “good gray poet,” who was born in West Hills in 1819. …
At Whitman’s birthplace in West Hills, meanwhile, a monthlong project called “Poem in Your Pocket” will work like this: Visitors will be able to take home examples of Whitman’s shorter poems, printed on “paper that will easily be folded in half or quarters to fit in the pocket,” said Cynthia Shor, executive director of the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, which operates the center. Later, those who took the poems will be able to hand them, or read them aloud, to (possibly surprised) co-workers, friends and neighbors. / The New York Times
