Verstehen

Witzig wie manchmal Sachen, die man für selbsterklärend hält, durch schulische Behandlung zu etwas Erklärungsbedürftigem werden. Dieses kurze Gedicht von e.e. cummings etwa:

a politician is an arse upon / which everyone has sat except a man.

Reicht das Offensichtliche nicht aus? Fehlt uns die „tiefere“ Bedeutung? Vielleicht weil man es uns so oft abverlangt, somit antrainiert hat? Man muß nur wissen, was arse heißt. Wohl nicht für jeden so leicht zu verstehen wie für Deutsche. Ich lese:

I did not know the formal definition of arse before reading the poem but arse is defined as the buttocks on the human body.

Das geklärt verstehen wir und übersetzen:

ein politiker ist ein arsch auf dem / jeder schon gesessen hat bloß kein mensch
