60. I’m Charles

For National Poetry Month, Speakeasy has chosen to examine the poem “I’m Charles,” by Charles Simic, author of the collection “New and Selected Poems, 1962-2012.”

“It was written over several years, the original idea being something about being hung by the tongue from the scaffold of language. Then, of course, it got more complicated with God joining the fray,” Simic wrote in an email message. / Barbara Chai, Speakeasy
