In some countries, creating a poem that speaks out against the government can get you arrested. Bahrain is one such country. It has arrested and jailed the young female poet Ayat al-Ghermezi.
Ayat al-Ghermezi created a poem that speaks out against the abuse of the people in Bahrain. Some lines include: „We are the people who will destroy the foundation of injustice. Don’t you hear their cries, don’t you hear their screams?“ She stated she created the poem to the attention of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, notes the Telegraph.
Ayat al-Ghermezi wants change in her country. She was using her poetry to rally protesters to fight the oppressive royal family of Bahrain.
Bahrain arrested the poet after she surrendered after security forces stormed her home. They put her four brothers on the floor at gunpoint. One of the security forces told Ayat’s father „Tell us where Ayat is or we will kill each of your sons in front of your eyes,“ notes the Independent.
Ayat was soon charged her with making an insult to the royal family and incitement. Ms. al-Ghermezi has been tortured in jail.
