There are words in Ms. Stone’s poems that cannot be printed in this newspaper, even for art’s sake. The words are not written for effect, they are there because of a brutal honesty. Indeed, Ms. Stone is sometimes called America’s Akhmatova. Like that poet of Russia’s post-revolutionary suffering, Ms. Stone doesn’t go for Symbolist tricks. Like Akhmatova, she writes uncompromisingly about passion and unbearable loss; about living in poverty and on the margins of experience. / The New York Times 10.12.02 über die 78jährige Dichterin Ruth Stone
