Stefan Augustin Doinas

Die New York Times meldet am 28.5.02, daß der rumänische Dichter Stefan Augustin Doinas im Alter von 80 Jahren verstorben ist.

Mr. Doinas produced 23 books of poetry as well as children’s books, essay collections and a novel during a career that spanned decades. His first poetry collection, „The Book of Tides,“ was published in 1964. He also translated works by Goethe, Shakespeare and many others.

Born in 1922 as Stefan Popa, Mr. Doinas first studied medicine at the University of Sibiu but moved on to philosophy and literature at the University of Cluj, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1947.

While teaching in a village school, he published poems in literary magazines. In 1956 he was arrested and sentenced to a year in prison by Romania’s Communist leadership. He was later rehabilitated.
