Who is the most-read poet in America today? A 13th-century Afghan-born mystic named Jalal ad-Din ar-Rumi, now simply known as Rumi. It’s easy to see why he appeals so powerfully to spaced-out Californians: his thought processes are joyfully anarchic, and his pleasures are all about eating and drinking, joking and making love, and the glories of the natural world. His ideas are perfectly congruent with Zen: „Try to be a sheet of paper with nothing on it/ Be a spot of ground where nothing is growing/ Where something might be planted/ A seed, possibly, from the Absolute.“ / The Independent 11.2.04
