The „Poet of Palestine“ died

Renowned Palestinian poet Fadwa Toukan, known as the „Poet of Palestine,“ died Friday at her home in Nablus. She was 86.

Toukan, whose poems have been translated into English and Farsi, was famous for her poetry depicting the suffering of the Palestinian people living under occupation.

She was also an avid promoter of woman’s rights and through her poetry, reflected the hardships faced by women in the male-dominated Arab world. / Jerusalem Post 13.12.03

Enough for me to die on her earth
be buried in her
to melt and vanish into her soil
then sprout forth as a flower
played with by a child from my country.
Enough for me to remain
in my country’s embrace
to be in her close as a handful of dust
